So we enlisted some free labor on Craigslist and had the yard cleared in an afternoon. Then we planted some grass for a simple and scenic area that’s a lot easier to maintain (see a full exterior breakdown here). We lightened things up and added a welcoming cheerful vibe by painting the floor (in subtle tan and cream stripes) and creating a functional seating area (we even added a little dog corner for Burger).

See Billy Porter in a black sequin caftan over a classic white shirt; Questlove, in an artistically paint-splattered jacket; and Fran Drescher, the SAG-AFTRA president, in a white brocade pantsuit. We replaced it with a curvy cobblestone patio that’s a lot easier on the eyes (and the feet). Adding some soft landscaping around the edge, bringing in some outdoor furnishings, and making a fire pit completed the overhaul. Oh and I do this face mask once a week (usually about 3 days after microneedling). You can mix it with apple cider vinegar or water AND YOU KNOW WHAT I USE!

Not to mention spending a whole lot of time down at the beach for sunset strolls or meals and swim dates with friends (eating takeout pizza on the beach has turned into a legitimate pastime – don’t knock it ’til you try it). We started this blog 16 years ago to chat about updating our first home (we loved DIY so much that we even DIYed our own backyard wedding). When we clicked “publish” on that first blog post back in 2007, we never could’ve guessed that blogging would lead to us renovating 7 homes, sharing 3,000+ projects, writing books, and designing products for Target & Home Depot.

We also upgraded the knobs with $2 finds from Hobby Lobby. Here’s the sunroom after painting the walls and ceiling, unifying the odd patch of brick on that back wall with more paint, adding some art, and bringing in some functional storage. After nearly a year of planning and saving our pennies, we started the reno.
Our internet isn’t always reliable (that’s putting it kindly) but we have a pool that we can use year-round and a hangout area with a firepit that we all love for frequent s’mores nights. We have a lot less square footage than we used to have, but it’s easier to clean and more affordable to heat & cool. We have a much smaller yard, but there are parks, green spaces, and playgrounds within walking distance where the kids can run and play.

The 65-year-old congressman was in stable condition under doctor’s care according to a statement released by his office on April 17. Our kitchen here is about a third of the size of the one in our last house, but there’s a grocery store, many restaurants, and more than one ice cream shop within walking distance. Here’s our backyard as it looked when we got the house. All wild and weedy and full of quickly-spreading liriope. Here’s the sunroom as it looked right on our snowy moving day back in 2010. It’s so much more open without dark cabinetry everywhere.
After all, what is a red carpet but a photo op in better clothing? And how many politicians have met a photo op they didn’t want to seize for a messaging moment? All anyone has to do is read their looks, if not their lips.

This blog was even a full-time job for us at one point (imagine telling your parents you’re cannonballing out of your career path to be “bloggers”). Here’s the hall bath that’s back near the other three bedrooms. We loved that it was so similar to the original full bath in our first house (and the tile was luckily in much better shape). Here’s the bathroom after we did a bunch of little upgrades (from painting the trim and the walls to replacing the light, toilet, some border tile, and frosting the window). Here’s our bathroom as it looked when we moved in. We immediately hung an extra long shower curtain to add height and lighten things up in this beige-on-beige room, but then we stalled for about 15 months.
This is the living room after we painted the walls, painted the trim, painted the beams, built a console table for behind the sectional (see it all accessorized here), hung some subtle patterned curtains, and brought in a new rug, ottoman, and desk chair. We also got a larger media cabinet and built a leaning chalkboard along with adding some overhead lighting. The white vinegar and water in the spray bottle is also a really great all-purpose cleaner (we use it mainly for cleaning windows and mirrors, and it also works to clean stainless steel appliances if you buff it on “with the grain” of the steel). I typically do a 3 parts water and 1 parts vinegar combo in my spray bottle and I’m good to go. I can’t tell you how nice it is not to have the entire cabinet under the sink crammed with cleaning products. Plus the fact that a big jug of vinegar is so cheap and goes such a long way means it saves us a ton of money each year, and I’m not always running to the store to get more.
In October 1991, The House of Love returned with a new single "The Girl With the Loneliest Eyes". And here’s the quirky little yellow guest bathroom that was attached to the guest bedroom. We decided to work with the vintage tile since it was in great shape and actually charmed us after living with it for a while, but to lose the dated and dingy look.
I am NOT a makeup pro (I’m pretty much the polar opposite), but I thought it might be funny to make a two minute video of me putting on my makeup because it’s so fast and easy, and a few people have seen pics like this and said “what did you use on your cheeks?! Tell me if you’d find that helpful and maybe I’ll work up the courage to aim a camera at my face for two minutes and press record. A few members of our household are sensitive to overly perfumed or fragranced stuff, so there’s no Febreze or Glade Plug-Ins in rotation. We generally rely on soy candles with various essential oils for a really nice non-irritating scent (like this one, which also keeps mosquitos away when we light it outside). This Mrs. Meyer’s candle is also one of my favorites (I take the cap and label off so it just looks clean and simple on a counter or shelf). It smells JUST LIKE the multi-purpose cleaner I use in the lemon verbena scent, so my little mom hack is that I like to light one in the kitchen so it smells freshly cleaned (but I didn’t actually scrub anything down – ha!).
